52 cm Arthur Schoenau early Doll

20 1/2" (52 cm) An adorable bisque socket-head child doll on her original composition and wood body. She is incised on the back of her head AS, which stands for Arthur Schoenau, followed by the number 0 1/2. She was made in Germany circa late 1880s.

She has very pretty bisque, hand-painted multi-stroked feathered eyebrows, painted upper and lower lashes, blue glass sleep eyes, soft rosy cheeks, tiny teeth in her open mouth and coral-shaded lips.

Her body has stick-style upper legs and has what we believe to be its original finish. She is wearing an antique dress, cape, antique shoes and socks, underwear and red velvet hat.

Arthur Schoenau of Schoenau & Hoffmeister fame produced this doll, and he had his own doll factory in Germany from 1884 –on.
This is a rare, hard-to-find doll and we think she would make a superb acquisition for the collector. She has a charming, endearing presence, is totally display-ready and would look beautiful in your cabinet!
