Especially beautiful face with richly-painted eyeliner and lashes, very study original body, wearing original multi-layered nun's habit with cape, elaborate cross and ьштшфегку Prayer Book with ivory cover.

PROVENANCE
The doll is preserved in its original cardboard box and its label, the lid retaining an octagonal paper label in a printed blue border, inscribed by hand in ink: "Poupée en religieuse, en costume des Dames de St Maur — offerte à "Maman" par sa tante, Supérieure des Dames de St Maur".
("A doll dressed as a nun, in the habit of the Dames de St Maur. Given to Maman by her aunt, Superior of the Dames de St Maur").
The Dames de Saint-Maur (Sisters of the Infant Jesus, named for their Paris mother house on the rue Saint-Maur) were a French teaching congregation founded in the seventeenth century by Nicolas Barré.
The inscription turns the costume from a generic nun's outfit into a documented one: this is the habit of a named congregation, and the doll was a gift made from within that community — from a Mother Superior to her niece. The word Maman shows the label was written later, by a child of the first owner, preserving the memory of the doll's origin. Such direct provenance is rare for nun dolls, where the order can usually only be inferred from the cut and details of the habit.
The label shows age-related wear and is torn at one edge, with a small portion of the writing no longer fully legible.
