French, circa 1880, wearing original Brittany costume. This costume is a true artistic embodiment of French regional heritage, preserved in this doll.
Judging by the materials (silk, velvet), the rich detailing (lace, beads), and the tall lace coiffe, this costume can be classified as a festive or even wedding version of traditional attire from the Brittany region.
In the second half of the 19th century, wedding outfits in Brittany were often black or dark blue rather than white, as these colors were considered “ceremonial.” In the Bigouden area in particular, women were married in black velvet dresses with decorative trim and a tall coiffe, which they continued to wear on special occasions throughout their lives.
