Wonderful and rare French metal purse dating from the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris. The purse has a warm bronze-toned finish with finely worked repoussé decoration, turquoise-blue floral accents, and a central panel of aqua silk ribbon. An oval medallion depicts the exhibition pavilion with French flags beneath the inscription “Exposition de 1878.” Complete with its original chain handle.
Good antique condition, consistent with age. French, 1878. Dimensions: 3 in. (8 cm) long × 2 in. (5 cm) high. Beyond its decorative appeal, this rare souvenir has particular historical significance and considerable collectible value for collectors of antique French dolls, as it commemorates an exhibition closely associated with the golden age of French dollmaking. At the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris, Maison Huret exhibited its celebrated poupées parisiennes, among the most luxurious and highly prized dolls of their time. The exhibition also coincided with the growing popularity of the new bébé dolls, including the famous Bébé Jumeau, which came to symbolize the golden age of French dollmaking. After receiving a gold medal at the exhibition, the Jumeau firm proudly used the inscription “Jumeau Médaille d’Or Paris” on its dolls’ composition bodies, boxes, clothing, and shoes.
