A. de Redante (19th century), after François-Hubert Drouais (1727–1775) - Boy in Blue Building a House of Cards, With Two Girls

Charming 19th-century copy after François-Hubert Drouais’s famous Rococo composition showing three aristocratic children at play: a boy in a rich “Turkish” costume builds a fragile house of cards at a green-topped table, flanked by two elegantly dressed girls in lavish embroidered gowns. A doll and small toys lie on the floor in the foreground, underlining the world of childhood while the children imitate the manners of adults. Signed A. de Redante at the lower edge and presented in a period giltwood frame bearing the London label of R. Watson, Carver and Gilder, Picture Frame Maker, 141 Wardour Street, Oxford Street on the reverse. Oil on canvas, probably 19th century, with the usual minor signs of age and wear but still very decorative and full of period charm.
