Rare French Music Automaton by Lambert "BEBE CAGE", c.1890.

Rare French Music Automaton by Lambert "BEBE CAGE", c.1890.

20" (51 cm). Standing upon a velvet-covered base is a bisque-headed child with brown glass paperweight eyes, lushly painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with shaded lips, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig over cork pate, carton moule torso and legs, wire upper arms, paper mache legs.

Attached to doll's torso is a wooden bird cage with bird and draped with cherries, and in her right hand she holds a branch of cherries. When wound, the doll turns her head from side to side, nods, while alternately the bird flutters and then she offers cherries; music plays.

Rare and superb automaton whose ivory and lace satin gown is lavished with velvet cherries at the fron of the bodice, matching bonnet, shoes, gilt and green fancy wooden bird cage.

Very good condition. Marks: Depose Tete Jumeau Bte SGDG 4 (head), LB (key).

Leopold Lambert, the automaton appeared in his catalog identified as #40 Bebe Cage, circa 1890.
