In 1922, Edouard Goldsmith Esslinger took the name Raynal (which means “fox” in the Occitan language) and began making soft toys in Paris. Two years later, he married Marthe Gold, who was making her own cloth dolls. Their joint business was soon renamed Les Poupées Raynal (Raynal Dolls). One of their first products was a Breton child’s caricature, with a molded, felt face and exaggerated painted eyes. They quickly transitioned to making more beautiful and lifelike children, inspired by the work of Italian dollmaker Lenci. Dolls of cloth and felt were Raynal’s focus until 1935, when they began to make baby and child dolls with celluloid heads. After 1937, celluloid was replaced by rhodoid, a less flammable type of cellulose plastic. Beginning in 1957, Raynal transitioned to hard plastic and vinyl production. The company went through a series of ownership changes, landing with Jamarex in 1976. The Raynal trademark was still in use until Jamarex became part of the Miro Company in 1979. ------------------------------------ I DO A LAYAWAY NO STATE SALES TAX!
